    Katie Hector (New Jersey, USA, 1992) is an artist, curator, and writer based near Los Angeles, California. She earned a BFA in painting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2014. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has garnered her recognition through awards, scholarships, and international residencies. Hector has most recently held solo and duo exhibitions at The Untitled Void, Seoul, Le Mont Art Space, Taiwan, Moosey, London, The Cabin, Los Angeles, and NADA Fair in Miami; as well as group presentations at The Hole, Hollis Taggart, The Orlando Museum of Art, and Red Arrow, Nashville. Her portraits of friends, people she’s met, and complete strangers are allegories of longing, intimacy, and grief in response to isolation and dissociation. Layering bleach and dye on canvas she builds-up and erases sections to create composite likenesses. She’s said that painting with bleach instead of acrylic, oil, or traditional mediums, allows her to have a direct conversation with the canvas itself. Within each painting, she’s testing the limits of the fibers and the canvas’ ability to retain or let go of pigment. Thus the memory of the surface produces the final afterimage; an impression of personhood, an uncanny portrait.

Obtuvo una licenciatura en pintura de la Escuela de Artes Mason Gross de la Universidad de Rutgers en 2014. Su obra de arte se ha exhibido a nivel nacional e internacional y ha obtenido reconocimiento a través de premios, becas y residencias internacionales. Hector ha realizado recientemente exposiciones individuales y en dúo en The Untitled Void (Seúl), Le Mont Art Space (Taiwán), Moosey (Londres), The Cabin (Los Ángeles) y NADA Fair en Miami; así como presentaciones grupales en The Hole, Hollis Taggart, The Orlando Museum of Art y Red Arrow (Nashville). Aplicando capas de cloro y tinte sobre lienzo, construye y borra secciones para crear imágenes compuestas. Ella dice que pintar con lejía en lugar de acrílico, óleo o medios tradicionales le permite tener una conversación directa con el lienzo mismo.
