• ALEX CHINNECK

Alex Chinneck (UK, 1984) is a graduate of Chelsea College of Art and a board member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Uniting the disciplines of art, architecture and engineering, the work of British sculptor Alex Chinneck is significant in ambition and impact. From carefully crafted objects to monumental public sculptures, his surreal pieces playfully reshape the fabric of the world around us, making the everyday extraordinary. Over the last ten years, the artist’s studio has built a succession of major public artworks that have established his reputation as “art’s master illusionist” (The Guardian, UK). Based in the UK and working internationally, Chinneck’s portfolio includes flagship public installations for London Design Festival and Milan Design Week. Completed artworks to date include: sliding the brick facade of a three-storey property; constructing a full-size melting house from 7,500 wax bricks on the site of a former candle-making factory; creating the illusion that a stone replica of Covent Garden’s world-famous Market Building was hovering; unzipping the walls of a historic Milanese building; unravelling a 25-metre high springing spiral staircase and inverting a 37-metre high electricity pylon to stand on its tip. Most recently, he was commissioned by the Musée des Beaux Arts in Nancy, France, to create a multi-sited installation in which he laced-up the cracks in a series of buildings around the city centre.
